The Putters PGA Pros Use To Master The Greens (2024)
Choosing a putter used to be a straightforward decision because there weren’t many options available. But today, just like everything else in golf, the variety of putters is vast, and it can sometimes feel overwhelming to figure out which one is right for you.
Given that close to 40% of a golfer’s shots are made on the putting green, regardless of skill level, it’s no surprise that putters are a hot topic—especially on the PGA Tour.
So to see what putters the PGA pros use when mastering the greens, and as part of Golfing Focus’ yearly study of the most used clubs on the PGA Tour, we took a deep dive into which putter models the top 100 players use.
Odyssey putters are the most used by the top 100 PGA Tour pros with 36% choosing one including Xander Schauffele and Sam Burns. Scotty Cameron putters are the next most popular with 21% using them. PING and TaylorMade putter models are each chosen by 14% respectively. Another 7 brands are played by this elite group including Bettinardi, LAB Golf and Axis1.
While these top pros have access to countless options, the story of the modern putter doesn’t stop at the brand or model.
And as we went deeper into our analysis it became obvious customization has become a key factor, with many PGA pros using custom-made or prototype putters tailored specifically for their preferences.
The variety of putter grips has also expanded significantly, adding yet another layer of personalization to the mix and it was also interesting for us to see what has changed since over the years we have carried out this detailed study!
The Most Used Putters On The PGA Tour – Top 100 Player Breakdown
If the top golfers on the PGA Tour want a new putter all they have to do is walk over to the nearest tour performance truck of one of the main manufacturers and test out whatever model they want.
It is therefore not surprising that our research found 79 different models of putter being used by the best players on Tour.
Such variety however makes it difficult to say one individual putter is the most used or is the #1 one putter on the PGA Tour especially when one also considers that some pros are switching out or testing out new putters nearly every week.
But we try always to give straight answers where we can at Golfing Focus and based on our in-depth analysis we would say some stand out as favourites.
- Scotty Cameron Phantom putters: The most used putter on the PGA Tour with 10 players out of the top 100 choosing it including Patrick Cantlay.
- TaylorMade Spider Tour putters: second most used model of putter chosen by 8 pros including Rory McIlroy and Scottie Scheffler.
- Odyssey Toulon Design San Diego & Versa Jailbird: each used by 3 players in the top 100.
- PING PLD Anser 2 & 2D: both used by 2 pros.
The diversity of putters highlights though how precise pros are about selecting the putter that works best for them.
It’s not just about the name on the putter—it’s about fit, feel, and performance on the greens.
And for many top golfers, the tiniest details matter and they will not accept anything less than perfection.
For instance, Bettinardi putters have a tolerance of plus or minus 1 gram coming off their production line. This may sound oustanding, but for players like former US Open Champion Matt Fitzpatrick, precision is everything and he won’t use his Bettinardi DASS BB1 Fitz putter unless it weighs exactly 346 grams.
Additionally, 52% of the putters Golfing Focus analysed being used by the top 100 PGA pros were listed as ‘prototype’ putters. These are models designed specifically for them and are ones therefore you will not be able to buy yourself in any golf shop.
In reality, that percentage is likely to be higher than that but even with all this variety Odyssey and Scotty Cameron continue to dominate, commanding 57% of the market share among the top 100 pros.
There’s a wide spectrum on the PGA TOUR when it comes to how often a player switches putters or tests new putters. Some guys it’s nearly every week, while others have played the same putter for years, or even decades, without the thought of trading out their money maker.
PGA TOUR EQUIPMENT REPORT
This is down on the 65% share Golfing Focus uncovered these brands enjoyed last year but these putter models continue to dominate overall.
PING and TaylorMade putters we found once again made up the best of the rest and TaylorMade’s Spider models continue to top the charts among the most or second most used among the top 100 PGA Tour pros.
And before the sceptics rush to point out that the pro’s choices are all dictated by sponsorship deals and money it was also interesting to note that Odyssey and Scotty Cameron putters were dominant again among the equipment ‘free agents’ we analyzed.
These pros, including Adam Scott and Jason Day, are free to play whatever clubs and putters they like. And out of the 13 free agents we discovered in the top 100 PGA Tour pros when it came to putters 10 out of the 13 use either Odyssey (x7) or Scotty Cameron (x3) putters.
What was again notable however was the variety among the models they play and of the 13 free agents we found them all of them using a different model of putter.
That being said when it comes to their putters on Tour it seems there remains a consensus among the top 100 that Odyssey and Scotty Cameron putters are slightly better than the rest.

Mallet vs Blade Putters on The PGA Tour? It’s Majority Mallet!
When it comes to putter design, one of the ongoing debates among both amateurs and professionals alike is the choice between mallet and blade putters.
Mallet putters, known for their larger heads and greater forgiveness have grown in popularity in recent years to the extent that now 73% of the top 100 PGA Tour players use a mallet putter.
Admittedly this stat includes 11% of this select group who use a smaller ‘mid-mallet’ model but it is still well ahead of the 27% of PGA players who use a blade or ‘wide blade’ putter.
When Golfing Focus first conducted this analysis a few years back we found that 65% of the top 100 used mallet putters.
That number dropped slightly to 60% last year but it seems now mallets are definitively the choice of the majority.
On the other hand pros such as Jordan Speith, Collin Morikawa, Matt Fitzpatrick and Tommy Fleetwood have remained loyal to blade putters and stuck with them.
Some however, like Rory McIlroy, are one of a few players who have switched on occasion between a mallet and blade design. In McIlroy’s case a change he has been spotted making is from his normal TaylorMade Spider mallet putter back to the blade Scotty Cameron Newport 2 he used to win his first two Majors.
He has since switched permanently back to the mallet Spider model despite it letting him down on the last few greens at the US Open at Pinehurst but it just serves to highlight how the top pros will not only change putter but also between blades and mallets as their confidence on the greens ebbs and flows.
Justin Thomas, who often tinkers with his putters, normally puts a mallet Scotty Cameron Phantom Tour 9.2 in play but also travels with the old-school Circle T 303 SSS blade he first used in middle school because “… it’s good for practice.”
Former Masters champions Adam Scott and Hideki Matsuyama meanwhile are also well known for constantly testing different putters from week to week on Tour.
Indeed Matsuyama is probably the most constant putter switcher of the current crop of top PGA Tour pros and can sometimes have 4, 5 and even 6 different putters in his bag during practice rounds.
In fact he tests so many putters that according to Scotty Cameron, he has the ‘coolest’ putter collection on Tour!
Putter Grips on the PGA Tour. More Than Just a Handle
Long gone are the days when putter grips were an afterthought, or when players simply used the grip that came with the putter.
Today, putter grip technology has evolved with multiple manufacturers offering a wide variety of sizes, textures and materials. This allows the top players to find the perfect fit for their hands and putting stroke.
So what does it therefore mean when it comes to looking at the topic of the putter grips PGA players use?
Among the top 100 PGA Tour players Superstroke dominates with close to half (46%) choosing them therefore making them the most used putter grips on Tour.
The Zenergy Flatso 1.0 is Superstroke’s most used grip but the most popular grip among this select group is PING’s classic PP58 putter grip. It is chosen by 10 players including Billy Horschel.

Despite the continued rise of Superstroke putter grips however, Odyssey, Scotty Cameron and PING brands still make up 33% of the putter grips used by the top 100. The Dancing Cameron putter grip is Scotty Cameron’s most used model.
Superstroke’s dominance though was also confirmed in the choices of the equipment ‘free agents’ and once again although the data set was small involving only 13 PGA players Golfing Focus discovered 7 of them using Superstroke putter grips.
That 12 of the 13 use a different putter grip though neatly serves to highlight how the putter grip, like the putter itself, has become a critical part of the customization process, and players often experiment with different styles before finding what works best for them.
